At a company meeting during the beta, Brian Halligan remarked that marketing contacts represented the most significant savings potential for HubSpot customers since launching the platform 14-years earlier. The marketing contacts release in late 2020 would solve for the customer by allowing storage of up to 15 million contacts in the CRM, but only billing for the tiered number of contacts flagged as 'marketing'. This was HUGE!
Fast forward to 2023 when nearly 44K [fix stat] HubSpot customers leverage this savings option by storing all of their data in HubSpot while only paying for the tier of contacts they identify as good marketing candidates. In 2021 and 2022, the marketing contacts billing option has saved HubSpot customers over $0M[fix stat] USD.

In this post, we lay out a straight forward step-by-step strategy to auto-set the number of contacts set as non-marketing contacts based on criteria you determine. In our example below, we use marketing email engagement, but you could just as easily use your own criteria in a HubSpot contact list to feed a HubSpot contact workflow.
